Thesis Title: Towards a neo-ecological ethic of solidarity: an analysis of the participatory and distributive dimensions of intragenerational and intergenerational climate justice.

prof. dr. Sigrid Sterckx
prof. dr. Johan Stuy

About

In view of the relation between historical responsibility and the vulnerability of the poor for global climate change, the integration of an intra- and intergenerational aspect in a theory on climate justice is primordial.

The emphasis on intragenerational (i.e. spatial) distribution – dominant in both the political discourse of the Kyoto Protocol and the Copenhagen Agreement as in the theoretical discourse – should not leave the intragenerational participatory nor the intergenerational aspect aside. This research will attempt to construct an opinion on climate justice that will include a participatory and a distributive dimension.

In the first phase the research will conduct an inquiry into the specific participatory and distributive matters inherent to an inter- and intragenerational aspect of climate justice. The findings will result in a second phase, which will lead to the construction of a uniting ethical perspective on climate justice and a neo-ecological perspective on distributive justice.
